A Morning in Muttrah Souq

On the corniche of Muttrah, facing the fishing boats and the old harbour, a narrow entrance leads into one of the oldest markets in the Arab world. Muttrah Souq has existed for centuries, and although much of Muscat has changed, the souq still feels like a place from another time.

The main lane is covered by a wooden roof that keeps the lanes cool even in summer. Smaller alleys branch off in every direction. Some sell silver jewellery and khanjars, others sell fabric, spices, perfume and frankincense. Many shopkeepers have run the same shop for decades, and some inherited it from their grandfathers.

Mornings are usually quiet. Shopkeepers open their doors, arrange their goods and greet their neighbours. By late afternoon, the lanes fill with families, tourists from cruise ships and residents looking for gifts. Bargaining is common, but it is always polite: a good price is often reached with a smile and a cup of coffee.

Modern shopping centres now offer air conditioning and large car parks, yet Muttrah Souq remains popular. For many visitors, the reason is simple. It is not only a place to buy things; it is a place to experience the sounds, smells and friendliness of Omani trade.
