Nizwa Fort: Power, Defence and Pride

Rising above the palm gardens of the old capital, the great round tower of Nizwa Fort was completed in the 1650s under Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Ya'rubi. It took around twelve years to build, and it remains the largest circular tower in the country. Its size was not an accident: it was designed to impress as much as to protect.

The fort was built at a time when Oman had recently driven the Portuguese from its coast. Nizwa, a centre of learning and trade in the interior, needed a stronghold that could resist attack and send a clear message about who ruled the region. The tower's walls are filled almost entirely with earth and rubble, making them extremely difficult to break.

Its defences are clever rather than simply strong. The narrow staircase to the top turns sharply several times, so attackers could not run up in large numbers. Hidden openings above the doors allowed defenders to pour hot date syrup onto anyone below. Some doors were even placed in unexpected positions to confuse strangers.

Today the fort's cannons are silent. Instead, the courtyards host traditional craft displays and cultural events, and the rooms tell the story of daily life in past centuries. For many Omanis, the fort is less a symbol of war than of a period when the nation regained its independence and confidence.
