If you visit only one place in Oman, I would recommend the ancient falaj villages of Ad Dakhiliyah, such as Misfat al Abriyeen.

As you walk through the narrow lanes, cool water runs beside you in stone channels, and tall palm trees shade the paths. The only sounds are birds, flowing water and, sometimes, children laughing.

These villages depend on the falaj system, some of which is more than a thousand years old. Farmers share the water in fixed turns, and five aflaj are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. Visitors can walk the trails, taste fresh dates and learn how communities survived in a dry land.

In my opinion, these villages are worth visiting because they show the wisdom of our ancestors. Furthermore, they are peaceful places far from the noise of the city.

To sum up, a falaj village offers beauty, history and calm in one visit — a true picture of Omani life.
