Beneath the Surface: Oman's Coral Reefs
تحت السطح: الشعاب المرجانية في عُمان

Read the text
اقرأ النصDivers who visit the Daymaniyat Islands or the fjord-like inlets of Musandam are often surprised by what they find. Beneath water that can exceed thirty-four degrees in summer, reefs are alive with parrotfish, turtles and, at certain times of year, whale sharks. By the standards of most tropical reefs, these conditions should be deadly.
Corals are animals that live in partnership with tiny algae. The algae provide food through photosynthesis; the coral provides shelter. When water becomes too hot, this partnership breaks down. The coral expels the algae, loses its colour and, if the heat continues, starves. This process, known as bleaching, has devastated reefs from Australia to the Caribbean.
Arabian reefs are not immune. Serious bleaching events have been recorded here too. Yet many corals in the region tolerate temperatures that would kill their relatives elsewhere, and researchers are keen to understand why. If these heat-resistant corals can be studied, and perhaps used to help restore damaged reefs, the Arabian seas could become an unexpected source of hope.
The threats, though, are not only global. Anchors dropped carelessly, discarded fishing nets and coastal construction can undo in a day what took corals centuries to build. Oman has declared several marine protected areas, and dive centres increasingly train visitors to float without touching anything. Such measures may seem modest compared with the scale of climate change, but scientists stress that healthy reefs recover from heat stress far better than damaged ones.
