The House That Was Not for Sale

The buyer arrived at four, exactly as he had promised, in a white car that looked too clean for the lane. He admired the carved door, tapped the mud walls with his knuckles and spoke enthusiastically about 'heritage tourism'. A boutique guesthouse, he explained. Twelve rooms. Breakfast on the roof.

My grandmother listened without interrupting. When he mentioned the price, my uncle, who had driven three hours from Muscat for this meeting, sat up a little straighter. It was, everyone agreed later, a generous offer.

She poured the coffee herself, although her hands were no longer steady, and served the buyer first. Then she told him about the date palm in the courtyard, which her husband had planted the year their first child was born, and about the room where the whole family had slept during the great storm of 1977, because it was the only one whose roof did not leak. She did not mention the price at all.

The buyer drank three cups — more than politeness required — and left before sunset. He said he would call. My uncle walked him to the car and stood in the lane long after it had gone.

That evening my grandmother asked me to help her water the palm. 'Guests,' she said, 'should always leave with something.' I understood, years later, that she had not been talking about coffee.
