Do We Still Need Libraries?

Twenty years ago, if you wanted to know the capital of Peru or the life cycle of a turtle, you probably went to a library. Today, the answer is a few seconds away on a phone. It is not surprising, then, that some people have started to ask whether libraries still have a purpose.

Those who doubt their value point to empty shelves and falling numbers of borrowed books. Why, they ask, should governments spend money on buildings full of paper when information is free online?

Yet librarians argue that this view misunderstands what a library is. Information online is fast, but it is not always reliable. A good library offers carefully chosen books and trained staff who can help readers judge sources. For students working on research, this guidance can save hours of confusion.

Libraries have also changed. Many now offer quiet study rooms, computer labs, reading clubs and workshops for children. For a student who shares a small house with a large family, a calm space to study may be as valuable as any book on the shelf.

Perhaps the real question is not whether we need libraries, but what kind of libraries we need. The most successful ones have stopped seeing themselves as storage rooms for books and started seeing themselves as centres for learning.
